Production at the Kashagan oil field may resume in the second half of 2014, according to Sauat Mynbayev, the CEO of KazMunayGas JSC.

"The production resuming date has not been set yet, but it is likely to start in the second half of the year," Mynbayev said at a press briefing of the Central Communications Service on Tuesday.

Earlier, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Serik Akhmetov declared the resumption of production at Kashagan will help the Government hit the targeted 83 million tons of oil in 2014.

Before the launch of the Kashagan project it was expected that production would reach 8 million tons of oil in 2014 and would increase to 12 million tons in 2015 and that would enable Kazakhstan to enter the world's 10 largest oil producers.

However, the operations at Kashagan were suspended in September 2013 due to a gas leak in the ground pipeline. The oil production was resumed in October and halted after another leak was detected.
