Calling all students: have you got a bright energy idea?

Under the banner Future Energy, Kazakhstan’s EXPO-2017, running from 10th June to 10th September, will provide a platform for discussion around the energy challenge, and aims to attract some of the world’s leading experts as well as showcasing some of the most innovative technologies in the field.

As part of this programme, Shell and KAZENERGY have come together to launch the Student Energy Challenge. The competition is aimed at encouraging students from technical universities across Kazakhstan to come up with original and innovative ideas that could deliver solutions to the growing energy dilemma.

Commenting on the programme, Duncan van Bergen, VP Upstream and Country Chair for Shell in Kazakhstan said: “The growing global energy demand poses a real conundrum. We need to find a way of producing enough energy to meet the needs of a rapidly increasing global population, while at the same time reducing our impact on the environment. Meeting this enormous challenge will require a lot of innovation and collaboration and our young people have a vital role to play. The Student Energy Challenge is about stimulating students thinking on this important global topic”.

Bolat Akchulakov, Director General of the KAZENERGY Association said: “For the young generation, nothing is more important than being appreciated and successful in their future professional environment. This opportunity provided by the "Students Energy Challenge" contest, will bring together the best initiative and creative youth of Kazakhstan. We invite those, who are courageous, smart and resourceful to participate in the challenge”.

The aim of the Student Energy Challenge is to encourage technical students to come up with original and innovative ideas that could potentially deliver solutions to the energy challenge, focusing on six themes:

  1. Monitoring fuel and energy resources
  2. Developing alternative energy from non-traditional sources
  3. Increasing energy efficiency and conservation – in domestic or commercial usage
  4. More effective use of electric and heat-power engineering
  5. Production of primary energy resources – oil, gas, coal, uranium – with less CO2
  6. CO2 reduction in transportation, power generation, building construction, domestic energy usage or food

A prize of €10,000 awaits the winning team, in addition to a masterclass – for the team and all students in the relevant faculty – delivered by Shell technical experts and other experts in the energy sector and related areas. Cash and mentoring prizes will also be awarded to the second and third-placed teams.

Teams interested in taking part must register before the 5th June 2017.  This can be done by going to the www.kazenergyforum.com website, to see details on the event, information on the application process, as well as the prizes on offer. Teams whose submissions make it onto the short list will be given the opportunity to present before a panel of experts at the IX Youth Forum – part of the broader KAZENERGY Eurasian Forum at EXPO-2017 - on the 7th and 8th September 2017.

Expert Seminar conducted jointly with the World Petroleum Council

LOCAL CONTENT DEVELOPMENT AND INTEGRATION PROCESSES

Expert Workshop (jointly with the World Petroleum Council )

Date: 31 October 2016

Venue: Oval Hall, Independence Palace, Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan

Local content is an indicator of country’s technological and industrial-innovative development representing the share of domestic goods, services and human resources in terms of value used in carrying out operations of companies in the country.  Over the years of independence Kazakhstan has done a great deal for local content development. However, to date the volume of domestic production and procurement of local goods, works and services is insignificant compared to that of the import.

In addition, the region is going through active integration processes.  Kazakhstan is part of the Eurasian Economic Union. In December 2015 the country joined the World Trade Organization. Therefore, maintaining the competitiveness of domestic businesses and further improvement of the state policy in the area of local content are paramount.

Further sustainable development of Kazakhstan’s oil and gas industry will require local businesses to modernize and improve the efficiency of existing production facilities, carry out technology transfer and build competent human resources.  It is necessary to achieve a successful balance between incentives for local content, supply chain, international competitiveness and sustainable development of domestic production and human resources potential in the subsoil use area.  This situation is typical for many countries in the region.

In connection with the above, of special interest is the foreign experience and international cooperation in this area with experts from member countries of the World Petroleum Council (hereinafter - WPC).

WPC is the largest international organization representing interests of the global petroleum community.  One of its basic goals is to build a dialogue between stakeholders to share experience and knowledge, facilitate the provision of expertise and development of recommendations for optimal solutions to the key challenges in the oil and gas industry.

Thus, the expert seminar will focus on analysing the main obstacles and joint drafting recommendations on improvement of the state policy for the local content development.  Implementation of the recommendations developed by the experts will be analyzed by KAZENERGY Association.  All findings, conclusions an proposals on the local content improvement experience under new conditions will be summarized and presented at a special session of the XXII World Petroleum Council to be held in Stambul in 2017.
