IV Forum of KAZENERGY Women Energy Club "Modern Image of Women's Leadership in Energy"

The IV Forum of KAZENERGY Women Energy Club "Modern Image of Women's Leadership in Energy" was held as part of KAZAKHSTAN ENERGY WEEK (KEW).

The IV Forum of KAZENERGY Women Energy Club “Modern Image of Women's Leadership in Energy” on promotion of women in various fields, such as career, education and family, was held on September 25, 2019, at the EXPO Congress Center in Nur Sultan. The Forum’s panel discussions, sessions and master class addressed current issues, important insights and real examples of female leadership in the oil and gas and energy sectors, and new international and Kazakhstani studies on gender diversity.

The general theme of the Forum was set by the EY master class “Emotional Intelligence of a Woman Leader”. Natalya Kopylenko, head of the Academy of Business in Central Asia, Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan: “High level of emotional intelligence helps understand your colleagues better and navigate your tasks faster, while meeting the deadlines".

An international expert in Gender Inequality, David Szollosi, PwC Switzerland, made a presentation on “Best Practices in the Corporate Sector in Ensuring Women’s Equality in the Workplace”. PwC studies show that the wage gap between men and women is the result of many factors, including occupational segregation, prejudice against working mothers, and direct pay discrimination. Moreover, such things as racial prejudice, access to education and age affect remuneration as well. Equality of women in the workplace and gender balance can only be ensured through diversity and inclusiveness of the workforce, which will ensure rapid and sustainable economic growth of companies and increase the well-being of the general population. The speaker presented the best practices of companies applying these principles, such as BEST BAY, BARKLAYS, HP and BASF.

A separate platform of the Forum focused on ongoing EBRD projects in Kazakhstan aimed at developing gender policy. This included a presentation of the interim results of the joint KAZENERGY and EBRD study “Women’s Role in the Energy Sector of the Republic of Kazakhstan” by the Executive Director for Human Capital Development of KAZENERGY Association Lyazzat Akhmurzina and Associate Director of Ergon Associates Kirsten Newitt. A report on the best practices in the corporate sector in ensuring gender equality in the workplace was presented by Anna Bjornermark, Associate Director for Services and Gender Mainstreaming, Gender and Economic Inclusion Team of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), who spoke about the importance of gender diversity in a company, modern personnel policy of energy companies to support and empower women; development of women’s leadership in companies, and many other things. Antonina Shenoyeva, Managing Director for Business Transformation at Samruk-Energy JSC, presented the Equal Opportunity Promotion Action Plan: priority areas and activities at Samruk-Energy, and told about the joint project with the EBRD “Strengthening Equal Opportunities” for 2018-2019.
